Somerset is a small town with 8 square miles of land area along the banks of the Taunton River. The town became the first suburb of the city of Fall River with rapid development in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.
Somerset was first settled in 1677 on the Shawomet lands and was officially incorporated in 1790. Somerset is bordered by Swansea, Dighton, Fall River, and Bristol, Rhode Island. The border with Bristol is located in the middle of the bay. The town is one hour’s drive south of Boston. There are plans to bring commuter rail service to the area which would provide easier access to Boston.
Somerset has nearly 18,500 residents in 7000 households. This town is truly a residential community with river access, beach access, and extensive recreation facility access. Somerset recently invested nearly 100 million dollars on a new high school and athletic facility and also spends over $14,500 yearly on education per student-one of the highest rates in the region.
